Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
